Wildflower Field!

Guess what worked?  In June, Nate and I scattered pounds and pounds of seed in our freshly plowed field, and planted a full acre of wildflowers.  The kids tromped in the mud behind us, pushing the seed into the freshly tilled soil with their muck boots, and then we sat back to wait.   We wondered if our little seeds could beat the weeds that were clearly racing them neck and neck?   The whole family would go out in the early mornings and pull giant ragweed to give our wildflower meadow a leg up.  And then one morning this week, the whole field burst into bloom!  To celebrate, I did some photos of my baby girl, whose 7th birthday is just around the corner.  We found a flowering vine  growing on the edge of the meadow, and made her a crown.  (Curious?  It’s a groundnut vine; it actually has an edible tuber that was a staple of the Native Americans!)  I’m looking forward to using the meadow in my fall sessions at the Ann Arbor Farm Studio.

Baby Chicks at the Farm!

We just added to our flock a number of 2 day old baby chicks, and they are available for your little one to hold during a farm session!   This can be a portion of your shoot at the farm, in addition to using all our other farm locations.  Your child can also collect the day’s eggs (and take home a lovely, free-range dozen!)   The baby chicks are cute for about 2 weeks, and then they hit an awkward phase…  so we are only booking these sessions in July.

In other news, we had a  need for a rooster, as our chickens are free range and roosters help protect the flock.  But roosters are notoriously mean to kids.  Nate found a lovely woman in Howell who sold us this gentle hand-raised rooster who will guard our chickens, but is docile enough to be held but the kids.

Dancing Shoot at the Royal Oak Studio

When you look at these photos, you will never guess how old this little one is.  Her beauty, poise, height, and dance skills are far beyond her humble age of 4.  Yup, she’s only 4!  (And months away from 5.)  She is a delightful burst of energy – the whole shoot I felt like she was exploding out of the frame, and I was just trying to capture a little bit of that contagious joy.  I love photographing dancers – I’m realizing these are some of my favorite shoots.  Little girls connect so intuitively with dancing, and it’s such an honest expression of a child’s spirit.   This was an especially fun shoot for me, as I have been photographing B. every year since she was born.  :)  This was a one hour session at  my urban studio near Royal Oak.   As you can see, a one hour session is plenty of time to get lots of dancing shots, (ballet and tap!) and then get some really nice everyday images as well.   To see more photographs of little dancers click here.

A studio that feels like home

Meeting new clients is such a pleasure to me.  I am thankful that every week I meet new families, often friends of my past clients, that I get to welcome.  Please know that if you refer your friends and family, I will be thrilled make them feel at home in the studio.  The art of a  business practicing hospitality has been largely lost, and I’m on a mission to be as warm and welcoming in my studio as I am to the friends that gather around our dinner table at home.

why photo shoot are for boys too

Sometimes we can be tempted to think that photo sessions are great for babies and girls.  This little man is the most amazing reminder to photograph your boys!  He is active and cuddly, joking and pensive, all while living in an imaginary superhero world… and kuddos to mom and dad for picking great boy clothing!

Ballet Study no.1 – my girl

After spending day after day photographing everyone’s else sweet babies, I needed a day to photograph mine.  We are renovating a farmhouse on 70 acres, and we got another room done yesterday – yahoo!  (and God bless Kenny Ingle and Ryan Campbell for all their help!)  This room is in the 1880’s section of our house, and we decided to leave it fairly rustic to be true to itself.  The floors are wide plank pine which we weathered grey using steel wool and vinegar.  We found rough plaster under 5 layers of wallpaper and  so we put a finish coat of plaster up, lime washed it, and left it just like that.  The worn out lead-paint trim all was removed, and was replaced with boards from our barn.

I’ve had it in my head to do some ballet photos of this 6 year old love of mine for some time now.  She adores dancing, loves to be active – she would fly if she could.   And she’s growing up – she seems so old in these photos that it hurts my heart to look them.  She made herself a paper crown, borrowed her big sister’s tutu, and before the room filled up with furniture, we made it a ballet studio for a day.
