Forgetting that you’re having a photo shoot

The littlest guy of this sibling trio started the shoot shy, as many little people do.  Who could blame him?!  Away from home, with a stranger hovering around him with a big camera? But the farm is perfect for shy kids.   We tried the swing and hammock out, and then wandered over to the coop, where we fed the chickens and collected eggs.  Then it was down the lane to the lake where we climbed the big rocks and looked for fish.  We ran a few races and then headed over to the cabin for a snack of cider and doughnuts…and before we knew it, the hour was over.

And somewhere in that hour, even the shyest of kids forget that it’s a photo shoot.  They start to laugh, and play, and relax.  They grin their real grin, and not only does everyone have a good time, but Mom and Dad get the photos they were hoping for.   This is my dream for the farm studio – a place where your kids can be kids, your family can relax, and you take home beautiful heirloom images to remember this stage of your family life.

Fall Family Sessions

The fall sessions at the farm could not be more fun for me as a photographer!  With the color at it’s peak, at the warm weather last Saturday, I had so many lovely sessions.  These are a few of my favorites from a session with my long time clients (who I now consider friends!) Danica and Eugene.  I love watching their kids grow- always a joy to see them again!

Cider, Doughnut, and Pumpkin Sessions at the Farm

The few brief weeks we enjoy fall in Michigan are filled with memories for anyone who grew up here:  spiced cider, hot doughnuts, pumpkin patches, crisp mornings with warm afternoons, local apples, and brightly colored leaf walks.   Come enjoy the best of fall at the Ann Arbor Farm studio!  We are picking up local cider, doughnuts, and apples from the cider mill for you to enjoy during your session.  Grab a bag of fresh apples and each child can choose a pumpkin to take home.  Enjoy a beautiful fall day with your family, and have the memories artfully captured to enjoy for a lifetime.  Each session includes your digital negatives.   Session availability is limited, and fall color is early this year!   Email aubreii@amykimballphotography.com to book your session, or for more information.

Sweet boys and a recipe

This family is seriously sweet as pie.  Like homemade all American apple pie.  And speaking of food, we served them homemade zucchini bread from the garden and Sarah has been asking for the recipe (which I have failed to send thus far – SO sorry Sarah!)  So here are some images of their beautiful family session, and our favorite zucchini bread recipe to boot!   You were a joy to work with!!

Cook’s Illustrated Zucchini Bread
2 c. (10 oz.) all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 tsp. table salt
1 1/2 c. (10 1/2 oz.) sugar
1/4 c. plain yogurt
2 large eggs
6 Tbl. unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 Tbl. juice from 1 lemon
1 Lb. zucchini, shredded and drained*
*Grate zucchini, peel and all.  Place grated zucchini in a clean dish towel and then wring out as much liquid as possible.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Generously coat a 9×5 inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.  Whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice and salt in large bowl.  Whisk sugar, yogurt, eggs, butter and lemon juice in medium bowl until combined.  Using a spatula, gently fold yogurt mixture and grated zucchini into flour mixture until just combined.  Transfer batter to prepared pan.  Bake until golden brown and a skewer inserted in center comes out clean with few crumbs attached, 45-55 minutes.  Cool for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack to cool for at least 1 hour.  Makes one 9-inch loaf.

Lovin’ the farm…

I don’t know that we will ever get over the beauty of the place we now call home.   It feels like such a joy to share this place with friends, family and clients.   Aubreii is telling me over and over that our clients are just gushing over their farm session images.  We are gushing over your images, too, and can’t wait to share some favorites this week!  There is supposed to be beautiful light and weather for the next week – please don’t hesitate to contact us.  We can squeeze in a few last wildflower field sessions before we pull out the hay bales, pumpkins, cider and doughnuts!  We have big plans for our fall color/pumpkin patch sessions – details coming soon!

Tami and Rich – a tickle torture jumping session

As a parent with young kids, sometimes you go into a  family photo session with certain expectations.  Like this…

You think the whole session will go just like this.  The kids are calm and smiling, everyone is into it and it’s just like you dreamed….except the reality is that it’s like 90 degrees and really buggy.  And it’s almost bedtime and your kids are wired…. so you can either get frustrated, or you can go with it.  And Tami and Rich are amazingly fun and flexible people who rolled with it.  I mean, they rolled with it so well, it looks like this is the shoot they planned.  In fact, I like these images better than a planned shoot because it says something significant about them.  That they love each other and the kids when things don’t go according to plan.  That they make the best of hard times, and that their way isn’t the only way.  That a tickle torture jumping session may be the best session there is.
