What makes a great holiday photo?

This is my second time photographing Chris and Nicole, and both times, I felt like they intuitively knew something about a great photograph.  They don’t feel compelled to look at the camera for every shot – they look at each other – and enjoy each other.  They don’t push themselves or their sweet baby to smile – they just let it be what it will be.  And sure enough, sweet baby girl was relaxed and smiled often, because they were relaxed and happy, too.   The clothing is simple, and so the focus is on the relationships and emotions.   So many of us, myself included, tense up on the other side of the camera.  So when you are in front of the camera this holiday season, may you be inspired to relax, play, and not worry about the smile.  Let the photos be what they really are, without forcing anything.  Whether you spend this Christmas with your baby, or your fiancee, or your grandma, try looking them in the eyes, or giving  them a real hug and see what happens.
