Focus on a Palette
For family photos, it’s tempting to match the entire family, but try to resist! Rather than put everyone in jeans and white t-shirts, think of a palette of colors – grays and blues with off white, or sage green with muted yellows. Then have some fun and add a pop of color – a splash of red from a scarf, or bright purple suspenders on a little one. Rain boots, jackets, hats, or jewelry can all make for quick outfit ‘changes’ and keep the final pictures interesting.

Keep it Simple
Play with texture! Get out your wool sweaters, flowing maxi dress, or linen anything. Just avoid busy patterns or any clothing with distracting text, logos, or illustrations. This will keep the focus on you and your family.

Consider Your Location
Our Ann Arbor farm studio has so many options for your family’s photos! If you’re here for summer and spring blooms, think light and airy – you’ll have endless color options to inspire your outfits, from lavender blossoms to bright pink cosmos. Fall sessions are warm and bold – golden hues, navy, and bright reds work well with autumn light and colors, and our beautiful evergreens. Winter sessions are an excellent time to show off your outerwear wardrobe – think fun mittens and hats, chunky scarves, and sharp winter coats paired with stylish boots.

Comfort is Key!
Planning for family photos can be stressful enough – making sure everyone is comfortable is important, especially the little ones! If you’re feeling good and enjoying yourself, it will show in your final pictures. So try to pick out clothes that don’t require constant tugging, pulling, or readjusting – and that make you all feel your best!
