Maternity Photos at Sleeping Bear Dunes

It’s humbling to do a shoot for professional photographers as talented as the Durlings. We headed north to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and got a perfect evening. They both grew up in Brazil, and I felt their origins in the beauty of this location and session. (To my mid-western mind, anything said in Portuguese sounds so romantic when spoken by a loving couple at sunset on a sandy beach!) A stunning session of the sweetest couple, celebrating a little one they are longing to meet! 🙂

Welcoming Hannah & Evan's sweet baby! Hannah is one of the very talented photographers that works for me, and I've known her since high school. In fact, we met when she took my high school photography class! (I knew she had a gift for photography even back then!) It's a joy to welcome her little one! After spending the last few months with her baby, she's ready to start shooting again, so be sure to congratulate her if you are lucky enough to have a session with her here on the farm!

We are registering students for our 2025 Teen Photo Camp!
Today's student images are a collection of water photographs.
All images are real student images used with their permission.

A story from the classroom:
I had one student who came to each class and chose to sit outside the group, away from the other students. He was quiet, new that year, and didn't know where he fit into things. As part of class each week I would turn the lights down and the class would sit together in the glow of the projector, and take time to review all the student images, larger than life on the wall of our classroom. I taught the art of "kind critique" and after weeks of observing me model it, the students became experts at highlighting each other's strengths. My student who was on the fringe of the group had a perspective unlike anyone else in the class. The class started commenting on how much they loved his work. As the weeks went by I saw him move from outside the circle to the inside, and not just in the photography class seating arrangement. Photography gives voice, identity, and confidence.
