Sleeping Bear Dunes

It’s humbling to do a shoot for professional photographers as talented as the Durlings.   (See their beautiful work) We headed north to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and got a perfect evening.  They both grew up in Brazil, and I felt their origins in the beauty of this location and session.  (To my mid-western mind, anything said in Portuguese sounds so romantic when spoken by a loving couple at sunset on a sandy beach!)  A stunning session of the sweetest couple, celebrating a little one they are longing to meet!  :)

When you can’t go wrong

Contrary to what you may imagine a farm pond to be, our farm pond is fed by a natural spring that is always filling it.  It has a spillway, and flows underground to a stream that heads north.  Some past owner of the farm hauled over many loads of sand from the nearby white sand dune on our land; and so instead of muck, we have a beach.  That past owner engineered a brilliant place, and my kids swim there every day the weather is remotely temperate.  We are thankful, thankful, thankful.  All this to say, we have a beloved beach, and I often plan for summer shoots to happen there.

Knowing Julia, and her decorating style that is based on clean lines and a love of white, we planned for her maternity session to reflect her style. When she arrived with her husband and 3 girls in white sundresses, I got excited.  Sometimes, the light, the clouds, and the sweet children are exactly as you hoped they would be.  Sometimes, you just can’t go wrong, and this was one of those shoots.  The girls were tender towards each other, helping their camera-shy youngest sister to warm to the experience.  This baby will be welcomed into so many loving arms!  It was the loveliest of evenings, with the loveliest of families.

Winter Maternity – Ann Arbor Farm

So feminine, so lovely.

To me, winter is one of the most inspiring seasons for light.  The whole world offers itself as a monochromatic backdrop.  The sunrises are studies in pinks on pale blue frosted fields. This shoot is inspired by the subtle pastels of winter. And it proves that even a snowless winter day can be the ideal setting for a winter session.  All images shot in our 1880’s farmhouse and the surrounding land of our Ann Arbor Farm location. (And my shutter speed was fast enough that you can’t see her shiver!)AmyKimballPhotography_0972

January Update: Newborns, Maternity and Farmhouse Renovations

January means lots of maternity sessions for all the babies that will be born this spring! And, of course, the winter newborns. I feel thankful on a weekly basis that I spend my days hanging out with new (and expecting) parents who are so genuinely interesting to talk to and a joy to spend time with. I have the best clients.

January also had enough time to do to some minor renovations in the farmhouse, and grow some paperwhite bulbs in the windows. (cause I get a little frantic when I can’t be in the garden on a regular basis!) A hodgepodge of images from the past weeks:

Ann Arbor Farm – Rainy Day Maternity Session

So delightful to meet this family – they could not have been more laid-back or cheery despite the rainy day!  Here are a few of my favorites from their large gallery of images – all images shot at the Ann Arbor Farm Studio – we used the farmhouse for the inside shots.  I’m already planning for their farm newborn shoot – dreaming/planning/pushing myself for some creative images of their baby boy.

Mike and Amber – Fall Maternity Session

Love this fall maternity shoot!  Mike and Amber are new clients, and I loved getting to know them.  We split this session between the Royal Oak Studio and the park next to the studio.  There will be fall color there for maybe another week – message us if you are interested in a session!  Amy Kimball Photography Ann Arbor Royal Oak_1050Amy Kimball Photography Ann Arbor Royal Oak_1049
