Preparing for Your Family Photo Session {Families and Couples)

How to prepare for your Ann Arbor family photo session

We know you want to make the most of your time with us! After years of working with families, here are my five favorite mindsets to keep in mind while you prepare for your session.

Preparing for your Ann Arbor family photo session

1. Kids will be kids!

Some ‘energy’ is par for the course. This will not flip us out – and it shouldn’t worry you either. We’re moms too, and we’ve seen all there is to see from our own people. Stay relaxed, and know that we are pros at cheering and distracting.

2. Don’t force it

If you’re kids aren’t smiling, don’t force it. We do have games and ideas for getting real smiles, giggles, and laughs from all ages. But we love a serious, pensive, or cuddly expression as well. With your help, we will try to discern the unique personality of your kids, and that’s what we are aiming to capture.

3. Warm up time is normal

Some kids hit the ground running. Others need time to get used to new environments. We understand introverts – we’ll be gentle and patient and engage your little one in play until they relax and start to be themselves.

4. No pressure

Don’t feel pressure to make everyone look at the camera. We will get some of those, but let your kids look at you, each other, a falling leaf, or a baby chick… when we need you all to look up, we’ll let you know! Trust me – the emotionally strongest images are of you interacting with each other. Those will be the images that you love most!

5. Step back

Sometimes (especially when grandparents are involved!) everyone gets excited and you suddenly find you are putting on a full scale musical in order to get the baby to laugh! Too many people directing kids can end up being confusing – so for a few minutes of your session, plan to take a step back, allow us to ‘do our thing,’ and watch your tribe with pride.
