When to Book Your Maternity Session (and Why It’s Worth It)

When is the BEST time for Maternity photos?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is: When is the best time to schedule a maternity session?

Many women aim for around 28 and 34 weeks – but there is honestly a lot of flexiblity to the timing! Every pregnancy is different, of course, so base this decision on your own health needs and comfortability, and schedule what works best for you, knowing we can make most times work. We have done many sessions right up to the last week before delivery!

I know maternity photos can feel like one more thing on your to-do list—or even something you’re nervous about. Many of my clients tell me they aren’t feeling their best or don’t usually love being in front of the camera. Please know: you are not alone. And also—this is exactly why I do what I do.

I want you to feel celebrated, beautiful, and seen. You’re growing a human (or maybe more than one!), and that is remarkable. My sessions are relaxed and gentle. We’ll find soft, flattering light, and I’ll guide you through natural, comfortable poses so you don’t have to worry about “what to do.”

What should I wear?

When it comes to clothing, I recommend soft neutrals or muted tones—creams, tans, dusty blues, or soft earth tones all photograph beautifully. Long, flowing dresses tend to be flattering and give a sense of movement and elegance, but the most important thing is that you feel good in what you’re wearing. If you book a mini session there’s only time for one outfit, but if you have an hour session you are welcome to bring an outfit change.

Who can I bring with me?

Whoever you want! We love photographing you with your partner, your other kids & your pets. But you are welcome to bring whoever makes you feel comfortable – moms, sisters, best friends welcome!

Will I be indoors or outdoors?

Most of my moms-to-be want to take advantage of the gorgeous outdoor farm locations, from the beautiful gardens to the spring-fed pond to the snowy evergreen trees. The time of year will determine what is most attractive during your session. However, we also have a 1500 square foot multi-room indoor studio, warm & cozy in the winter and with A/C in the summer. It’s fully equipped with comfy furniture and natural light spaces, and we can spend a portion of your time in there as well. It has a minimalist, modern Scandinavian feel.

Many families take advantage of our packages and book their maternity and newborn sessions at the same time. Not only does it guarantee your spot on my calendar, but it’s one less thing to do once baby arrives. I love the beautiful storytelling flow of images from pregnancy to those first memorable days with your newborn.

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, your pregnancy is a fleeting season—worth remembering, worth honoring. I’d be truly honored to help you do that!

If you’re thinking about booking a maternity session—or a maternity/newborn bundle—send me a message. Let’s talk.
