My Checklist for planning your Stress Free Photo Session!
Planning a family photo session can be stressful – planning outfits, working around nap times, worrying about getting those perfect smiles… I know how it goes! But as much as I want to get you the most gorgeous family pictures, I also want you to enjoy your session!

And after years of helping families capture treasured memories, I’ve found a few tricks for helping families relax and really enjoy their sessions!
- Kids will be kids… some “energy,” tears, or a fit are par for the course.
This will not flip me out – and it shouldn’t worry you either! I’m four kids in myself, and I’ve seen all there is to see from my own people. Stay relaxed, and know that I’m a pro at cheering and distracting. - If your kids are not smiling, don’t panic and don’t force it
I do have games and ideas for getting real smiles, giggles, and laughs from all ages. But I love a serious, pensive, or cuddly expression as well. With your help, I will try to discern the personality of your kids, and that’s what we are aiming to capture. - Kids taking some time to warm up is normal and expected
Some kids hit the ground running and some need time to get used to new environments. I understand introverts – I will be gentle and patient and engage your little one in play until they relax and start to be themselves. - Don’t feel pressure to make everyone look at the camera
We will get some of those, but let your kids look at you, each other, a falling leaf, or a baby chick… when I need you all to look at me, I’ll let everyone know. Trust me – the emotionally strongest images are of you interacting with each other – those will be the images that you love most. - Step back a little and enjoy it
Sometimes (especially when grandparents are involved!) everyone gets excited and you suddenly find you are putting on a full scale musical in order to get the baby to laugh! Too many people directing kids can end up being confusing – so for a few minutes of your session plan to take a step back, allow me to “do my thing,” and watch your tribe with pride.
My Ann Arbor farm studio is set up perfectly for families to relax ~ a beautiful indoor studio space (with bathroom & changing area!) and acres of property to enjoy a multitude of different backgrounds and vibes, from the spring-fed pond to the colorful woods to the rustic-modern barn.
I’d love to hear from you about what you want from a photo session! Feel free to get in touch. 🙂
